No Mountain Too High - Klopp Boasts

Image
Jurgen Klopp says there is no mountain Liverpool cannot scale after their dramatic win over Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League opener. Liverpool looked to have let a two-goal lead slip when Kylian Mbappe equalised in the 83rd minute in a pulsating tie at Anfield, but Roberto Firmino - who did not start because of an eye injury - came off the bench to score a 91st-minute winner. "If you play against PSG you have to step up, you have to reach the next level," he said. "You play 95 per cent and you lose 5-0, 100 per cent and you win the game." PSG, like Liverpool, went into the game having taken maximum points from all five of their league games this season. No team had kept their winning margin below two goals and Thomas Tuchel rested Neymar and Mbappe for the 4-0 win over Saint Etienne on Friday. "Denying them so often, I don't think a lot of teams have done that," said Klopp. "It was neces

Spurs Must Get Results

Image
Jamie Redknapp looks ahead to a mouth-watering clash at Wembley as Tottenham take on Liverpool on Saturday. Who needs the win more? How will Spurs shape up? And just how much have Liverpool changed since the 4-1 defeat last season? This game just has that feeling of being more important for Tottenham. Since the start of the season, there have been question marks over the lack of signings, and then the debacle over the stadium. Then they followed up a great result at Man Utd with a really disappointing performance at Watford. I've never seen Mauricio Pochettino so animated after a game before. He was fuming, and it was almost as though he sensed this performance was coming. They have Dele Alli out and Hugo Lloris out; if they lost against Liverpool, there will be a lot of question marks asked about why they didn't buy players, why didn't they strengthen? Tottenham have really got to get something out of this game, and it won't

EPL To Use VAR This Weekend

Image
Premier League officials will stage their first “multi-match” top-flight trial of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) later this month, the UK Telegraph reports. VAR testing will take place simultaneously at all the 3pm kick-offs on September 15. This is the day league chiefs will try to show they have the technological capacity, to deal with the workload posed on a busy Saturday schedule. The games will be treated as a normal VAR game, but the assistants in the VAR hub will not have any communication with the on-field referee. A Premier League source said referees have been encouraged by the use of the technology at three recent EFL Cup matches at Brighton, Fulham and Leicester. VAR to be used in all EPL 15:00 matches.

Kane Fitter Than Ever- Pochettino

Image
Mauricio Pochettino has rejected suggestions Harry Kane is fatigued, insisting it is only a matter of time before Tottenham striker is back to his goal-scoring best. It is believed the England captain need a "mental break" , while Jamie Carragher thought he looked "sluggish" in Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Spain. But Spurs boss Pochettino does not share that view, and is confident Kane - who has scored two goals in six games for club and country this season - will soon put to rest any fears he is suffering from burnout. Pochettino said "I think he is fit. I do not read and do not listen to what is going on around. The most important [thing] is that we trust. "For me, there is no doubt that he is one of the best strikers in the world. When a striker does not fill the net and does not score goals, always you need to find some reason why but I think he is fit.

Eriksen Sinks Wales

Image
Christian Eriksen's double proved too much for Wales as they suffered a 2-0 defeat by Denmark in the Nations League on Sunday. After a turbulent week for Denmark, whose players went on strike but returned for this game, the Tottenham playmaker fired home a classy opener (32) before scoring from the penalty spot (62) after Ethan Ampadu was adjudged to have handled inside the area. The result was a bit of a reality check for Wales and new boss Ryan Giggs after their impressive 4-1 win over the Republic of Ireland on Thursday in their Nations League opener. The Danes made the last-16 of the World Cup, eventually being knocked out by Croatia on penalties and were superior in every department from the moment Eriksen put them in front.

Giroud Ensured Victory

Image
Olivier Giroud ended his 10-match goalless run with the winner as world champions France secured a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands on their return to Paris. Ryan Babel looked to have spoiled the homecoming party in the capital with his first competitive international goal in 13 years to cancel out Kylian Mbappe's first-half opener in the Nations League clash. However, with 15 minutes remaining, Chelsea forward Giroud scored the 32nd goal of his international career, taking him past Zinedine Zidane with only Thierry Henry, Michel Platini and David Trezeguet ahead of him on France's all-time list. It also gave Didier Deschamps' side the advantage in Group One of League A, following their goalless draw in Germany on Thursday. The France coach named the same side which returned from Munich with a point and, with Antoine Griezmann pulling the strings from the number 10 position, they dominated against opponents who are rebuilding after failing to q

EPL August Player Of The Month

Image
Lucas Moura has won the Premier League Player of the Month award for August after a string of fine performances for Tottenham. Moura, who has been given a run in the Spurs team under Mauricio Pochettino with Heung-Min Son on international duty with South Korea, has enjoyed his finest spell at the club since joining from Paris Saint-Germain in January. The 26-year-old scored his first Premier League goal in Spurs' 3-1 win over Fulham, and then put in a man-of-the-match performance as Pochettino's side won 3-0 at Manchester United. Moura scored twice in that game, and has now given Pochettino a selection headache for when Son returns to the squad following international duty. Moura's Spurs take on Liverpool at Wembley after the international break, live on Sky Sports Premier League at 12.30pm on Saturday, September 15. In the other August awards, Watford's Javi Gracia picked up Manager of the Month, while Jean Michael Seri won Goal of th

Pogba Unsure Of Future At United

Image
Paul Pogba has cast doubt on his Manchester United future saying, "who knows what will happen in the near future". Pogba's future has been the subject of plenty of speculation amid reported interest in the World Cup winner form Barcelona and former club Juventus. In an exclusive interview in Germany, the 25-year-old midfielder refused to take the opportunity to declare his intention is to remain at Old Trafford in the long-term. "My future is currently in Manchester". "I still have a contract, I'm playing there at the moment, but who knows what will happen in the near future," Pogba has endured a somewhat fractious relationship with Jose Mourinho at times, with the Portuguese criticising the midfielder on a number of occasions. At the start of the season, the France international went as far as saying he feared being fined if he said what he really thought when asked if he was happy and

Sane Needs To Work On Body Language- Kroos

Image
Toni Kroos believes Leroy Sane can be a match-winner for Germany and Manchester City, providing he listens to advice and works on improving his body language. Despite playing a key role in City's Premier League-winning squad last season, Sane was not part of his country's World Cup squad this summer. But after Germany's travails in Russia, coach Joachim Low named the 22-year-old in his squad for Thursday's UEFA Nations League opener against France in Munich and the friendly international against Peru on Sunday. Sane's recall to the international fold coincides with his omission from the Manchester City squad, where he is yet to start for Pep Guardiola's side and was not even named among the substitutes for the  2-1 Premier League win over Newcastle on Saturday. "Sometimes you have the feeling with Leroy's body language that it is all the same, whether we win or lose. He has to improve his body la

Sterling Withdraws England Squad

Image
Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling has withdrawn from the England squad for the matches against Spain and Switzerland due to a back problem, the Football Association has announced. Sterling had been one of 18 players to keep their place in Gareth Southgate's squad for the first matches since the World Cup in Russia. Midfielder Adam Lallana, goalkeeper Alex McCarthy and defenders Joe Gomez, James Tarkowski and Luke Shaw have all earned call-ups. The 22-man squad arrived at St George's Park on Monday and will train together for the first time on Tuesday. Jamie Vardy and Gary Cahill have effectively retired from international football - although both are available in case of an injury crisis. In Vardy's absence Southgate named Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford and Danny Welbeck as the only strikers in the squad. England play Spain at Wembley in the UEFA Nations League on Saturday.

Mohamed Salah, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric have been shortlisted for the 2018 Best FIFA Men's Player award. Two Premier League players are nominated for the Best FIFA Goalkeeper award including Tottenham's Hugo Lloris and Leicester's Kasper Schmeichel. Former Chelsea 'keeper Thibaut Courtois, who signed for Real Madrid in the summer, is also nominated. Didier Deschamps, who led France to World Cup glory in Russia, is on the Best FIFA Men's Coach shortlist with Croatia manager Zlatko Dalic and former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane. This year's Best FIFA Women's Player nominees are Lyon pair Ada Hegerberg and Dzsenifer Maroszan as well as Brazil's Marta. The FIFA Puskas award - given for the best goal of the year - is made up of 10 nominees including Gareth Bale's overhead kick in the Champions League final and Benjamin Pavard's exquisite strike in France's 4-3 win over Argentina in the World Cup last 16. Mourinho Delighted With Fans' Support

Image
Jose Mourinho hailed the importance of the fans' reaction to the defeat to Tottenham after Manchester United got back on track against Burnley. Romelu Lukaku scored twice as United returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over the Clarets at Turf Moor. United were put on course for a routine victory when Lukaku headed them in front on 27 minutes and the Belgium striker doubled his tally with a close-range second a minute before half-time. Mourinho was seen passionately clapping the home fans at the final whistle after that defeat by the north Londoners at Old Trafford, and he admitted that positive reaction from the crowd had had a huge effect on his team's mentality ahead of this important clash with Burnley. "The quality of the performance and the happiness within the team is Old Trafford's responsibility," he said. "The reaction after the game at Tottenham was fundamental to keep the team moving in the right direction." Paul P
